Railroad Settlement Allowed
A settlement reached following what has been described as marathon negotiating sessions resulted in a halt to a rail strike. The agreement grants workers a 24% increase over five years, and an additional day off for personal use. It also changes the strict attendance policy to allow absences on sick days.
But the deal lacks paid sick days, which is an important issue for many railroad employees. This could lead to unions rejecting arbitration which could trigger the cooling-off period of 30 days.
Land Grants

Railroad companies used large areas of land that were granted to them by the government of the state and federal governments to help defray the cost of building their lines. They could then utilize this asset to secure mortgage loans or to sell bonds in the future. This enabled them to attract residents to the areas where the lines would go. This resulted in a greater demand for their services.
Land grants had many problems with corruption and abuse however, they ultimately helped the United States prosper, by developing a transportation network that opened up the West to settlement. Railroads helped with programs for agriculture that helped farmers to succeed and increased the demand for railroad transportation.
The federal government wanted to encourage the construction of a transcontinental railway by offering large grants to private corporations. The federal government gave 130 million acres to the first five companies to constructed a transcontinental railway, and the states contributed 50 million acres.
To be eligible for land grants, railroads were required to give up the rights they had received as compensation or to aid in construction. These rights were generally based on natural features like streams and rivers, although in some cases the boundary was indicated by markers. Railroads were permitted to choose other public lands in lieu of the grant land.
Contracts
Rail transport is an essential aspect of the economy and requires a high degree of reliability to keep freight moving. A major rail strike could have halted shipments and imposed significant costs on customers. However, with a total of $27 billion in net profits railroads can afford make a dent in their revenue streams that are passive and provide employees with paid leave and better work conditions. Nearly all progressives from the House, including Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Mark Pocan and Ilhan Omar as well as Pramila Jayapal, voted for the settlement.
